TRAINING FOR ATTORNEYS

PROBLEM
Our legal service providers (LSPs) were well-trained in immigration law, but working with the Afghan immigrant population presented unique challenges. Many Afghan immigrants destroyed their tazkira, or identity papers, prior to leaving Afghanistan for fear of retribution if they were intercepted by the Taliban. They also frequently destroyed documents that showed their connection to the U.S. government for the same reason.
As a result, many Afghan immigrants who served alongside U.S. armed forces did not have proof documenting their service when they arrived in the U.S. This lack of documentation was just one complicating factor for our LSPs, and additional issues such as trauma-related memory loss, polygamous marriages, and terrorism related inadmissibility grounds (TRIG) presented unique legal challenges which required targeted training.
PROCESS
We met regularly with a legal SME to conduct research into the typical intake process for immigration lawyers. We also met with an external instructional design team to build the training and generate AI images. We wrote narrative learning content based on research into Afghan culture and designed exercises and responses that aligned with our information architecture.
SOLUTION
-
Create a narrative, interactive online training program to give LSPs critical information about working with Afghan clients
-
Deeply understand the unique legal issues our audience was facing and provide training solutions for LSPs
-
Ensure that LSPs had received the necessary training to best support their Afghan clients on a complex journey toward permanent residency in the U.S.
